William B. Greer, 87, of Bristol, husband of Winifred "Winnie" (Neilson) Greer, died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Ingraham Manor, Bristol.
Bill was born in Belfast Northern, Ireland on Dec. 27, 1921, and was a son of the late William B. Sr. and Emily (Bell) Greer. He has resided in Bristol most of his life and was employed at the Barnes Group for 40 years before retiring in 1981 as Purchasing Manager of the Steel Division.
He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II serving with the 15th Air Force in Italy. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Bristol and served on the Prudential Committee and Diaconate before his illness. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Frederick Franklin Lodge #14 A.F. & A.M., Plainville, Bristol Fellowcraft Club, Scottish Rite of Waterbury and Bridgeport, Sphinx Temple AAONMS and the Sphinx Temple Guard. He was also a member of the Bombardment Group Association.
In addition to his wife Winifred of 62 years, Bill is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David W. and Judy Greer of South Lyon, Mich., and Brian A. and Kate Greer of Portland; a sister, Edna G. Mills of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Matthew T. Greer and his wife Michelle of Cumming, Ga., Bradley J. Greer of Menlo Park, Calif., Sarah E. Greer of Wethersfield, and Douglas W. Greer of Portland; and a niece, Carolyn Sirkin of South Lyme.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Bristol, with the Rev Kristen Kleiman, Pastor officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
