Sculptor Gil Boro holds one of the maquettes that will be on display at Gallery One.
A new exhibition opened Friday at Gallery One at the Clayhouse in Old Saybrook. Gallery One presents Gilbert V. Boro who will be exhibiting the maquettes for several of his monumental public sculptures.
Boro maintains Sculpture Grounds at 80-1 Lyme Street in Old Lyme that is open daily to the public, but this exhibition at Gallery One provides the opportunity to view in a more intimate setting the models for some existing large sculpture as well as for others yet to be created. Boro’s work can also be seen in the Sculpture Miles in Madison and Ivoryton and on the grounds of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point.
The Gallery will also be featuring the paintings and works on paper of seven of its artists: Elizabeth Boyd, Madison; David Brown, Old Saybrook; David Brubaker, Old Lyme; Denise Gaffney Hartz, Old Saybrook; William G. Nelson, Ivoryton; Diana Perron, Branford; and Jill Vaughn, Ivoryton.
Will Nelson recently had a solo exhibition in the Exit Gallery at the Essex Art Association, which featured his photographs of water images, ranging from abstract surface patterns to the light explorations of dusk and dawn. At Gallery One he focuses on abstractions he finds in richly textured and colorful graffiti.
The decision of the judge at Madison Art Society in awarding Elizabeth Boyd “Best in Show” earlier this year, is confirmed in Boyd’s collage and mixed media abstractions, and her acrylic and pastel still lifes. Exhibiting both areas of her abilities gives the viewer the opportunity to discern their similarities.
Drawing on the resources of nature, Jill Vaughn’s abstract works in collage and mixed media reveal her sensitive awareness of abstraction as an integral part of the representation of nature. And Denise Gaffney Hartz expands her colorful and geometric acrylic abstractions to include figures emotively standing, walking--and flying.
Gallery One strives to present a diverse range of work. The brush lines in Diana Perron’s monotypes express the vitality inherent in figures and animals. David Brubaker’s oil paintings and etchings of landscapes and interiors/still lifes reveal a mosaic-like way of looking at color and space, while flowers, gardens and sunrises continue to be the focus of David Brown’s oil paintings.
The exhibition runs from Aug. 4 through Oct. 2. Gallery One is located near HomeGoods in the Old Saybrook Shopping Center, 665 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Thursday until 8:30 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Mondays.
