Free FGM Day for NL County Residents

Visitors of all ages who are resident in New London County can enjoy the Florence Griswold Museum at no charge today.

All New London Country residents receive free admission to the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme today, June 21, thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut.  Special activities have been planned to help showcase the Museum's current exhibition, Visions of Mood: Henry C. White Pastels

Residents are asked to bring a form of ID (driver's license, school ID, etc.).

"The Museum is grateful to the Community Foundation for its continued support," says David Rau, Director of Education and Outreach. "Their commitment to providing diverse educational opportunities is a tremendous benefit to the region.

During the free weekend visitors to the Museum can view the current exhibition quot;Visions of Mood: Henry C. White Pastels.  The artist's family, who still live in Waterford, recently discovered a trove of White's work. These landscapes of locales from Waterford to Venice glow with intense color.

Visitors can also discover the historic Florence Griswold House, the boardinghouse for the Lyme Art Colony, with a very unexpected and famous dining room

Besides strolling the historic gardens and relaxing along the river, visitors can wander through the new Rafal Landscape Center where Museum's volunteers, the Garden Gang, will be on hand to answer questions about the facility house in a recently restored historic barn.

Families can participate by playing gallery games and going on scavenger hunts in the House and gardens.

In honor of the current exhibition, everyone is invited to watch pastel artist Laurel Friedmann at work in the garden and then try their hand at creating their own masterpiece with free art supplies from the Hartman Education Center.

Rau remarks, “Boring museums are a thing of the past.  The Museum creates fun and educational activities so that families can learn together while exploring the treasures of the past."

Located on an 11-acre site in the historic village of Old Lyme, the Florence Griswold Museum is known as the Home of American Impressionism.  In addition to the restored Florence Griswold House, where the artists of the Lyme Art Colony lived, the Museum features a riverfront gallery for changing art exhibitions, education center, extensive gardens, a landscape center, and a restored artist’s studio.

The Museum is located at 96 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, exit 70 off I-95 and is open year round Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1 to 5pm.  Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for students, and free to children 12 and under.
